There are two professional football clubs in Edinburgh, Heart of Midlothian FC (Hearts) who were founded in 1874 and Hibernian FC (Hibs) who were founded a year later. Both clubs operate in Scotland's senior football division, the SPL.

Hearts are the more successful club in terms of trophies won overall and their recent history. Hearts have won The Scottish Cup three times in recent times (1998, 2006 and 2012) and after Celtic and Rangers are the third best supported team in the land. The club has also experienced many exciting trips in Europe where it has played and defeated teams such as Bayern Munich, FC Basel, Braga and Bordeaux.

Getting tickets to see Hearts at Tynecastle Stadium is a lot easier than it was a few years ago. Although the team command great affection throughout the land, the credit crunch has had a definite impact on football attendances.

Going to see a football match in Scotland is certainly an experience. It is very noisy, it is very passionate and it is not quite at the silky skill level of Barcelona or Manchester Utd. The days of violent crowd scenes are long gone and you will be able to watch a fairly decent match is safe and comfortable surroundings. Alcohol is not permitted within the ground although there are some 'interesting' bars in the vicinity of the ground.

Hearts are a unique club in world football and were the first to enlist en masse for service during the First World War. The club has no affiliation with any religion or bias and welcomes supporters new and old irrespective of ethnicity, gender, age or shoe size. You will fit in far better if you are wearing anything maroon ( The club's colour) and scarves can be bought around or at Tynecastle Stadium.

Going to see Hearts is a genuine Edinburgh experience. Many who go for the first time, are hooked forever and to that end the club has a strong network of supporters clubs throughout the world.

Heart of Midlothian FC quite rightly pride themselves as being The Heart and Soul of Edinburgh.
