Crawley is a New Town built around a historic core. In the six decades since the New Town was created, to build "homes fit for heroes" after the Second World War, it has had more than its fair share of criticism. In fact, it is one of the most dynamic towns of its size in the UK, with some fine open spaces, good places to eat, drink and party, and some excellent hotels. About 20 million people arrive in Crawley each year without realising it - they are at Gatwick airport, within the town boundaries, and only a £1.20 bus ride away (on the unique Fastway guided bus system) from the centre.
