Visitors to the city of Blois have various opportunities to participate in a number of sports and activities.
A great way to spend the warm, sunny day around Blois is to rent a bicycle and ride around town, exploring the many interesting sights and attractions found around the area. A number of places rent bikes, and the prices generally range from 3 to 10 Euros per day. The Tourist Information Office in town (located at: 23, place du château.) is a good place to find tourist maps of the area. Bear in mind that the castles are fairly far apart. Teenagers could cope with Blois to Chambord and back. Children under 14 couldn't.
Some visitors choose to bring along their clubs and play a few rounds at the Chateau de Cheverny Golf course, which is located around 25 minutes from the city center. A closer, nine hole golf course which is cheaper but quite challenging technically is La Carte (located on the road west of Blois on the road to Onzain). For information about opportunities to play around the country, check out this France Golf Courses link.
There are a couple of places around Blois that offer horseback riding. Lessons and guided tours are available. This can be a unique way to see some of the town’s countryside.
If you are in Blois between April and October don't miss the excellent international garden festival at Chaumont castle (one train stop from Blois). Every year visitors will see very interesting, if sometimes wierd and wonderful, avant garde gardens by the very best international designers. Children love it. Don't forget to buy some ices while you're there. Check on the web site for wine tasting evenings.
Beauval Zoo is a great place for young and old, about an hour's drive from Blois. Picnic along the cher in Saint Aignan. Beauval have recently acquired pandas. This zoo has a breeding programme so even those of you who are not overly keen on zoos should try this one.
The Aquarium de Touraine is good for rainy days but link it with a day trip to Chenonceau
Check the local newspaper and tourist authority for details of hiking trails (organized walks on Sundays) , mountain biking and horse riding. It is now possible to cycle the length of the Loire to Nantes (takes about 5 days).
