BARCELONA < > TOULOUSE by train using the mountain route through Latour de Carol

Those who may wish to travel through the Pyrenees by train can do so via Latour de Carol  - Enveitg using regional trains with a change of train at the Spain/France border. No reservations are needed nor are they available, no need to worry about buying tickets in advance and no worries about trains being full.

There are three connecting trains each day. These trips do not show up on the international journey planners. This is the only route through the mountains, rather than around them.

It is a longer journey than using the fast trains via Girona, Perpignan and Narbonne but much more scenic and less expensive at about 32 Euros. Between Latour de Carol and Toulouse, sit on the left hand side to get the best views.

Word of warning  - take food and drink supplies! The trains listed below are local services with no on-board facilities. There is NOTHING at the border station of Latour de Carol. The station bar/café closed in 2004 and the only shop within 1.2km (3/4 mile) is a pharmacy.

Reservations are neither required nor available. Trains are modern electric multiple units with air-con. Plenty of room for baggage.

Listed below are only the trains that make connections at the border. There are additional trains in both France and Spain without connections. French trains also stop at Pamiers, Foix and Ax les Thermes, Spanish trains at Puigcerda, Vic and Granollers plus other minor stations.

All connections apply daily except one as noted. Times valid until 7 July; subject to alteration thereafer.

The station is between the two villages, slightly nearer Enveitg.  For those who wish to spend longer in the mountains before moving on, here's a quick run-down of what is around - and it is not a lot.

Strange area - no bars or cafés!

Right opposite the station is a pharmacy. It's the only shop within 1km. Open 0900 - 1215 and 1430 t0 1900, closed Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday.

For the village of Enveitg, turn right on leaving the station and follow the signs. The village is about 1km (2/3rds a mile) along the road, slightly uphill.

In Enveitg, there is a bar/pizzeria about 10 minutes walk from the station. There is also a supermarket (VivaL) open these hours: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 0800 - 1230 and 1600 - 1900; Wednesday and Sunday 0800 - 1230. Mondays closed all day.

Latour de Carol is a little further away, about 1.5km (3/4 mile) but has more to offer. Turn left on leaving the station.  Flat walk.

Restaurante Peypoch (somewhat uprmarket) in the Place du village; Auberge Catalan on the N20 main road nearby. There is a supermarket VivaL also on the main road open daily 0730 - 1930 in summer at least.

Latour de Carol is also the end station for the Petit Train Jaune' the celebrated narrow gauge railway that winds its way through the mountains from Villefranche. Waiting travellers might see one of the trains, but services are very infrequent. For more about Le Petit Train Jaune, visit

The timetable can be found under 'Fiches Horaires'.
