The Church of Santiago El Real honors St. James (Santiago). The facade dates from the 17th century and was designed as a triumphal arch. It has two sculptures of the Apostle Santiago. One of them shows the saint wearing a pilgrim's habit and the other shows his equestrian statue with the saint in battle. Many pilgrims going to Santiago de Compostela pass through the church. It was started in 1513 and is the oldest church in the city. The church has only one nave with a vault supported by six pillars. The main altarpiece dates from the 17th century and tells the story of the saint.
