One of the surprises about Murcia is that it is not all beach and bars. Inland, there is a whole new world, from mountains to wineries, holy cities to hidden villages.

When you are in Murcia, you should put at least one day aside to explore the hidden interior. The best way to do this is with a private daytrip company or tour guide.

One of the best trips is a Jumilla wine tour. Easily as good as Rioja, but hardly available outside Spain. The town of Jumilla is lovely, and the mountains around the area are spectacular. Visiting the bodegas is a real eye opener, and you can pick up a great wine or cava for a fraction of the price in the supermarkets of the region.

Day trips to Caravaca de la Cruz - one of the 5 holiest christian cities - are also highly recommended, along with quad biking in the Sierra de Espuña mountain range and national park.

The list goes on. Take time to research, and treat yourself to a day away from the crowded beaches and the endless golf courses.
