It’s impossible not to take day trips when in Bellagio – as you gaze out onto Lake Como, you’ll be tempted to visit every single one of the towns and villas that dot its banks. Take a ferry or drive around the lake’s perimeter; you won’t be disappointed with any of these spots.

  • Punta Balbianello: Upon catching sight of the village of Lenno and the grand villa of Balbianello, you might get a sense of déjà vu – if you’re a Star Wars fan, that is. Balbianello served as the paradise location where Anakin and Amidala fell in love in Episode II: Attack of the Clones. Even if you are a culture snob, Balbianello is worth a visit for its historic buildings and panoramic view of Lake Como.
  • Como : Located on the southwestern tip of the lake, less than an hour’s drive from Bellagio, Como is a walled town with many of its original architecture intact. Como is the sendoff point for some of the region's best hiking trails, many of which wind up to higher elevations where you can admire the lake from above.
  • Menaggio : Nestled at the base of the mountains, Menaggio is the best place on Lake Como to rock climb and hike. Actually, the Swiss town of Lugano is just a half hour from Menaggio, and ambitious day-trippers should take advantage of the opportunity to experience in two countries in one day.
  • Cadenabbia : Located across the lake from Bellagio. Whilst in Cadenabbia visit Villa Carlotta a beautiful villa built in the 16th century for a Prussian Princess but now visited for viewing its glorious gardens. It takes approx 10 minutes on the local ferry from Bellagio to Cadenabbia. The villa is opened in the months of April to September.
