A Roundtrip from Lucerne to Mount Rigi
One of the most beautiful excursions in the Lucerne area is a roundtrip over Mt. Rigi with it's wonderful views. Take a full day and enjoy this great roundtrip which is the most preferred one:
In the early morning take a boat to Vitznau. It will pass one of the most attractive parts of lake Lucerne. From Vitznau you cross the road to the red cogwheel train which brings you up to Mt. Rigi.
Alternatively you can take the boat to Weggis and walk to the cable car station to Rigi-Kaltbad. From there you can walk up to Rigi Kulm or take the red cogwheel train up there.
Both alternatives offer great views down in the valley and on lake Lucerne. From Rigi Kulm railway station you have great views in the alps. Climb the top of Rigi where the TV tower is. Take the smoother path as there are more great views on lake Lauerz and lake Zug. From the top you have an overview over nearly half of Switzerland. On the Northern side you see the flatter part of the country with its many lakes. On the Southern side you have a great overview over the alps. In the West, on a clear day, you even can see the Jura.
Count the many lakes you can see, there are eight of them: Lake Lucerne, lake Sempach, lake Hallwil, lake Baldegg, lake Zug, lake Aegeri, lake Lauerz and lake Sarnen. Got them?
From here you have two options to conitnue your roundtrip:
A: Walk down to one of the railwaystations between Rigi-Kulm and Rigi-Kaltbad and take the red cogwheel train down to Vitznau or the cabelcar down to Weggis from where you can go back to Lucerne by boat.
B: Walk down to Rigi-Kulm, where you came from, and take the blue cogwheel train down to Goldau. This side offers also great views.
From the railway station Arth-Goldau you have different alternatives to travel back to Lucerne:
A: Take a direct train to Lucerne
B: Visit first the great little zoo of Goldau (Natur- und Tierpark) for an hour or two and travel back after that.
C: Take the train to Zug and visit the old town of Zug which is small but beautiful or walk along lake Zug and enjoy the great sights from there. There are restaurants along the lake which are all pretty good. Look at the Top Questions about Zug on the Zug forum for more information. By the way, there are great sunsets to see from the Lake of Zug.
From Zug you have regular trains back to Lucerne.
A great day is guaranteed.
