Church of La Madeleine

Address: Rue de la Madeleine 1, 1000 Bruxelles

The Church of La Madeleine is one of the oldest churches in Brussels and was started by the Brothers of Mercy in the 13th century. In the 15th century the church was completely econstructed. The church suffered severe damage by French artillery in 1695 and had to be renovated. There is a small bell tower above the façade which dates to 1697. The main door has a date of 1637 and has a Baroque style. In 1902 the church was bought by the Belgian government for the construction of the north-south railway connection in Brussels. However the church was granted a reprieve and restored between 1956 and 1958. The church is dedicated to Saint Rita.
