For most travellers, Frommers and DK Witness are two very valuable resources as their suggestions and recommendations are really dependable. If you are interested more in an adventure or doing the non-touristy spots and off the beaten path suggestions, you can get a good idea from Rough Guides to Portugal (either from their website or buy their book).
For a small and handy but great introduction to the country's rich history, a must read is Portugal: A Companion History (Aspects of Portugal S.) by José Hermano Saraiva. There are maps as well as photos with details up to modern day Portugal. For a more comprehensive history book, Portuguese Voyages 1498-1663 : Tales from the Great Age of Discovery by C. D. Ley. For the famous Vasco da Gama's part in bringing Portugal into the world commerce, Into the Rising Sun : Vasco da Gama and the Search of the Sea Route to the East paints a good picture what the trip was like. Another good choice is Journey to Portugal by José Saramago, this is not so much of a history book but one's views and description of the places that he had visited, great description and observations of all that came in his path. And to know Portugal, one has to know its history as a naval power. A good book that compiles some of the more famous shipwrecks and stories is The Tragic History of the Sea by C. R. Boxer. Enjoy !
