The great hall of Oakham Castle stands just near the market place, it is a fine example of late 12th century domestic architecture in England. 240 horse shoes hang on the walls of the Great Hall.  It was the custom that every peer of the realm must give a horse shoe to the Lord of the Manor on their first visit to Oakham.  The oldest is said to be given by Edward IV in about 1470......
