Richmond is the Karoo town that claims to be closest to the halfway mark if you are travelling on the N1 from Johannesburg to Cape Town or the reverse. 642 km and 8 hours drive from Cape Town and 761 km and 9.5 hours drive from Johannesburg.
Richmond is 421 km, or 5.5 hours driving, from George (on the Garden Route) via the Swartberg pass and the N12/N9 to Oudtshoorn (on Route 62). Oudtshoorn itself is 362 km or 4.5 hours drive from Richmond on the N12 which crosses the N1 not far from Richmond.
To reach Richmond from Port Elizabeth is a 381 km and 6 hour drive.
This of course all means that Richmond is practically in the middle of nowhere!
Fortunately very large numbers of domestic tourists and travellers use the N1 to cross the Karoo from the northern provinces to get to the Western Cape and Cape Town. As a result Richmond has B&B's, Guest Houses and Restaurants established to serve this passing trade.
