Found on Cork Street in Kinsale, Desmond Castle was built in the 1500's as a customs house by the Earl of Desmond.  It has an interesting history that includes occupation by the Spanish in 1601. It was used by the British to keep American sailors captured during the American War of Independence.

In 1747, a tragic fire killed 54 prisoners, many of whom were French. Since then, the locals refer to this building as the French Prison.

The building now holds a Museum of Wine that shows Kinsale's link to the wine trade.
