The Leanyer Recreation Park is located on Vanderlin Drive below Leanyer.   It can be reached by catching the number 9 bus from Casuarina or Palmerston bus stations.

Large Recreation Pool

Leanyer Recreation Park is FREE including the use of the 3 long waterslides.   The Water based facilities are open Wednesday to Sunday and public holidays during school terms and 7 days a week during school holidays from 10am to 7pm.   All other parts of the park are open 8am till 8pm 7 days a week.   There are life guards on duty at all times the water facilites are open.   Small children need to be supervised or they will be removed.


The 3 Waterslides are large and quite fast.  They are named Go Bananas (Yellow Slide), Blue Blast (Blue Slide) and Funderstorm (Red Slide).  They start at a height of 14m and all the slides are over 100m in length.  You must be 1.1m to ride the slides. 

Funderstorm - you need two people to ride this slide.  You also have to ride on an inflatable 2 person tube.  Once in the slide it is totally dark until you get to the exit ramp.   This adds to the fun/horror depending on your point of view about not being able to see what's coming.

Blue Blast - this is a large diameter slide, adults can sit up in this slide.   This is a single person slide and does not require a tube.

Go Bananas - this is a small diameter slide sinlge person slide, adults need to lay down.  This is quite a fast ride.

Water Playground

This is a water playground with small slippery dips, small waterslides water cannons, water mushroom, large bucket which dumps water every 5 minutes.  The water playground has a rubber floor so damage from falls is minimised.


The pool is a large and shallow.   The deepest part of the pool is about 1.2m, however there a large sections of the pool that are well less than 1m in depth.   There are also 4 plunge pools above this main pool that are a maximum of 0.4m deep. The pool has grass surrounds inside the fence.


The playground is a traditional playgound with all the normal playground equipment including swings, bars etc.   The playground has a rubber floor like the water playground.

BBQs and Picnic Areas

There are a number of free BBQs scattered through the park.  There are large expanses of grass on which to setup a picnic etc

Other Facilites

The Bike and skate ramps are large and have a mix of small and large ramps.  The basketball court is near the entrance to the park before the skate and bike ramps.

Wave Pool


The Wave Pool is located on the Darwin Waterfront near the Darwin Convention Centre, Stokes Hill Wharf and the Medina Hotel.  It can be reached from the city by crossing the pedestrian bridge that runs from the end of Smith St to the Waterfront.   The Waterfront can also be reached by catching the number 14 bus which runs from the city to Cullen Bay and the Waterfront.


The Wave Pool charges admission fees.   Full Day adult passes are $8 and $5 for half a day.  Children are $5 and $3.50 for the same times.   There are special tickets for families, concessions and children under 2 are free.  

Entrance Fee includes the use of a Boogie Board and Tube.   You are not allowed to take your own water toys to the wave pool.   Surfboards are banned.


The Wave Pool is capable of generating a range of waves with a wave size up to at least 1.2m.  There are small childrens wading pools in the facility.
