Known as the "Opal Capital of the World", this interesting little town is quite the sight to see. When you arrive, you might wonder where all the houses are - the fact is they've been built underground and into the hills. This way, residents are able to keep a cool house year-round, even in the harshest extremes. Summer temperatures can reach over 50 degrees Celcius. The underground homes give this town a really strange appearance - it looks almost like an empty desert. If you ever saw Mad Max II, this may look very familiar.

You can stay in accommodations that are below ground for an authentic experience (although if you'd rather stay above-ground, there are places for that as well). It's definitely something you won't find anywhere else - and chances are you'll be telling your friends back home all about it when you get back.

Coober Pedy has over 70 mining fields and is the largest opal mining area in the world. You can browse the many shops selling the opals or give it a go yourself, just don't try it in the summer months.
