City Circle Trams is a free tram service that operates within the central business district of Melbourne. Its convenient hop on hop off style allows passengers to visit such attractions as the Docklands/Harbour Town, the Aquarium, Old Melbourne Gaol, Federation Square, the Immigration Museum etc. Complete with recorded commentary the historic trams are an ideal way for visitors to familiarise themselves with the city centre. The old vintage look of the tram makes the ride very authentic. Trams run in both directions approximately every twelve minutes between 10am and 6pm Sunday to Wednesday and extended hours, 10am - 9pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
There is now also a free bus service that extends a little further out of the central business district. There is a Visitor's Information Booth with helpful staff located in the Bourke Street Mall.
You can catch public transport, buses, trams and trains easily, though the trams are the most enjoyable. A two hour ticket can be purchased from most convenience stores, at stations, or onboard the trams. Recommended trips to take are the Number 8 tram to Toorak, that takes you past the Botanic Gardens, Arts Precinct, and past Chapel Street, South Yarra, where you should hop off to look at the boutiques and restaurants found here. St Kilda is another good trip to take, to try the European Cakes, or walk along the beach.
