Train enthusiasts who've tried it all - steam, gorge, and model railways, have another experience to add to their bucket list. Located in an extensive public garden in Palmerston North, New Zealand is Esplanade Scenic Railway. This miniature railway travels 2.3km through Victoria Esplanade taking approximately 20minutes and is great not only for train lovers, but young families. One of the stops is a children's playground with a flying fox, mouse wheels and all kinds of play equipment - for toddlers to teenagers. Other areas traverse native bush, beneath an avenue of cherry blossoms (they bloom in late September) and past walking tracks leading to the adjacent Manawatu River.
Generally open only in weekends (1-4pm), the Esplanade Scenic Railway is one of Palmerston North's top five experiences. One of the others is the Dugald MacKenzie Rose Gardens located in the same park.
