Christchurch has plenty of sports and activities to offer, keeping all of its visitors thoroughly entertained.

The main sport played in all of New Zealand is Rugby, but for those who don’t know, there is more than one form of the sport played.  The highest level team of the Rugby League association in New Zealand is the Warriors , who are based in Auckland.  The National Rugby Union team is the New Zealand All Blacks .  The highest level local team is the Crusaders.  Although catching a live match for any of these teams may take a bit of planning, the games will always be on TVs throughout the city.

During the summertime, heading to the beach is a popular activity.  There are a few surf spots and plenty of great swimming locations (note that ocean water in NZ is never very warm).  Check out Christchurch Beaches for more information.

For cultural lovers, the city is home to a handful of great museums.  For more information, visit Christchurch Museums.

There are plenty of things to do for the area’s active travelers, including diving, boating, fishing, golfing, and skiing during the winter time, which will require a drive outside of the city.  Lake Tekapo is only a 3-hour drive south en route to Queenstown, and Aoraki Mount Cook is 4 hours from Christchurch.  These areas offer numerous trekking, mountaineering and off-piste skiing options amidst New Zealand's most spectacular alpine scenery.
