New Zealand has the opposite seasons than those in the Northern Hemisphere so if planning on a summer vacation in July, you will in fact be heading down to Queenstown in the dead of winter. However, this will give you some great skiing and spectacular sightseeing. There are fabulous lakes, mountain ranges, and plains that stretch for miles throughout the region, and these make for great day trips or opportunities for extended travel. During the summer there is a good deal of adventure tourism in the area and this doesn't stop through the winter. Hours are sometimes changed for the shorter days but Queenstown remains active and buzzing 12 months of the year.
Because of the high number of visitor numbers to Queenstown, especially in the summer months and through the ski season, many of the more popular accommodations and restaurants become fully booked. Certain activities also should be booked in advance to ensure space. You should also check the weather before you head down to see what to pack. Queenstown is an informal resort and smart/casual is the norm.
