Recommended restaurants: Controvento (Italian) in Katariina Kaik running off the sweater stall street. You need to book, and choose upstairs. Also Sisalik, a surprisingly spacious and bright cellar restaurant opposite the Hell Hunt pub on Pikk. The Hell Hunt itself, Estonia's first pub, has an excellent range of international beers including wheat beers from Munich, Belgian fruit beers such as Kriek (cherry) and Framboise (raspberry) as well as Hoegaarden and Guinness on draught. It does very good pub food such as chicken with apricot and chilli for 110 EEKs and a huge shepherd's pie (in this case, minced lamb and mushrooms baked under mashed potato and cheese) for only 75 EEKs which is just over £3 or about 5 euros.
If you like Indian, a lovely, beautifully decorated, newly opened, fun restaurant is Arcadia on Pikk 33, just before the Greek restaurant and Hell Hunt. The food is amazing, service is very good and they have a beautiful garden in the back courtyard for dining or drinks. Waiters are charming and very helpful. Don't let the basement entrance deter you from trying it. House wines are great and reasonable. A lovely evening out, but if you're in a hurry, you might go elsewhere. Also wins the award for best restroom in both decor and use of space...you just have to see it to understand. Favorite Pub: Karje Kielder on 1 Vaike- Karja, just past the Hotel Barron's. Great atmosphere, really good, hearty food at the best prices found in Tallinn and the staff is very friendly. Again, it's in the basement, but what a nice surprise once you get downstairs. You won't find it in any guidebooks, but been there three times in the past week and everything ordered has been great! Most romantic without breaking the bank....Definitely, AED up on Rataskaeva about #8. Very charming decor, wonderful, well priced menu and elegant presentation of great food. Still less than $30 for dinner for two, wine and a shared dessert. Lovely, relaxing setting for an evening with someone special. Did see groups of people enjoying the evening and friends meeting for drinks, so though looking for romance, AED works well for anyone who appreciates well prepared food. Also have a seating area out back, but due to weather stayed in the cozy interior.
