Just across the Vanšu tilts (the big cable-stayed bridge) is the island of Ķipsala. The former fishermen's district, it is supposedly now one of the most expensive landmasses in Europe. It has a fantastic mix of decaying wooden houses sitting alongside those which have been fully restored and updated. Even one of Latvia's former Prime Ministers lives here. There are great views looking across the river towards the old town and the port region of Andrejsala, and one of Latvia's most expensive restaurants in the old plaster factory. Its a 30 minute walk from the old town or a 10 minute bike ride.
