Every Saturday and some weekdays Honor Flight Network flies in WWII veterans to see their memorial. Some flights are chartered so you will have over 100 WWII veterans arriving at once.
Flight arrivals are into Reagan National airport, Dulles airport, and the BWI airport. Hundreds of people come out to greet them as they get off the plane. There is a band playing military songs, fire trucks spray a huge water arch over the jet and the whole terminal is decorated. Most of time time there is military Honor Guard there to help greet.
It is definitely something that you can only see in Washington and something not to miss while you are visiting. You do have to contact the Honor Flight Network to get on the list to get a gate pass to greet the veterans at the gate. To get a gate pass at Reagan National email firstname.lastname@example.org
It will be the most memorable and patriotic experience of your whole trip. WWII veterans are the country's most precious piece of history.
