Take a ride on the Western Hemisphere’s longest escalator. The Wheaton station of the MetroRail, located near the north end of the Red Line, features an escalator over 500 feet in length and over 200 feet high that takes passengers from the underground subway level to ground level. The ride takes over three minutes to get to the top. (The second longest escalator in the Western Hemisphere is also in the MetroRail system, at the Bethesda station on the western leg of the Red Line.)
The Woodley Park and Rosslyn Metro Stations also offer dizzying elevator rides. Speaking of the Rosslyn station, movie fans may be interested in seeing the Exorcist Steps. Located in Georgetown between M Street and Prospect Street is the creepy, narrow, old stone staircase featured in a famous scene of the movie The Exorcist. The adjacent house, 3600 Prospect Street, was also used as a filming location for various scenes in the movie. This area of town is located across the Key Bridge from the Rosslyn MetroRail station.
For an evening stroll or afternoon picnic, don't miss Gravelly Point Park, right off of George Washington Parkway, heading into Washington DC from Virginia. Located between George Washington Parkway and the Potomac River, visitors can get a very close-up look at planes heading to or from Reagan National Airport!
