Both taxis and rental cars are available in Islamabad, but there are certain issues that go along with choosing either one of these options. Note: roads throughout Pakistan are dangerous when compared to those in most Western countries.
Taxis are a good way of getting around the immediate city, but if planning on traveling much further, consider the other options (see the Trip Advisor: Getting Around page) as they can be more comfortable for longer journeys. Fares are to be negotiated before starting a trip, and are usually very cheap. Think about arranging for round trip fares, because taxis can be hard to come by in many areas. Generally, taxis will be waiting outside of major public areas such as the airport, train station, bus station, and large hotels. Because most drivers do not speak English, make sure to carry a map with your destination distinctly circled. Taxis are generally yellow in color.Rental cars in Islamabad are a bit different than in other places in the world. Most of the time when hiring a car, a driver comes with the vehicle. This is generally a good thing as driving in Pakistan can be complicated and dangerous for first time visitors. There are rules on the roads, but many drivers choose not to follow them, which often makes for hectic driving situations. Surprisingly, hiring a driver is not too expensive. If a driver is not wanted, a large deposit must be put down in order to obtain a vehicle. Both options can be arranged at certain tourist centers. Check out this Pakistan Driving Dangers page before deciding to get behind the wheel of a car.
