The most frequented restaurants are in the major tourist hotels. However, there are a number of quality places to eat if one is willing to venture a few block away from the hotel. In general, the local quisine contains an intense mix of spices. On the downside, it can seem like much of the local cuisine is fried or dripping in oil. Fish curries, string hoppers, egg hoppers - these are the local dishes you need to try to get the flavor of Sri Lanka. And, if the local hole in the wall has lots of men wearing sarongs sitting around eating with their hands, it's probably okay to dive on in and give it a shot.
