If you have a day to spare do not miss out on a visit to Cheung Chau island. Best on week days,crowded on weekends,this place is a gem - think of the Greek Islands meet China.Take the ferry from Central pier 5 (Outlying Islands Service). The ferry comes in to the fishing harbour which is full of traditional fishing boats.
Many open air seafood resturants are found along the dock with colourfull umbrellas and cold beer. Walk through the winding back streets full of old style houses, traditional shops and some interesting temples over to the pristine Tung Wan swimming beach.
To go further, hire a bicycle from the shop at the north end of Praya St. along from the ferry terminal. Check out Morning Beach and Afternoon Beach. Also worth a ride is Coral beach at the north end of the island and Italian beach to the south. Have a seafood meal on the dock while watching the sun go down before heading back to Hong Kong.
Cheung Chau is an island without any buses and cars so you can enjoy a traffic free island experience even in Hong Kong.
