As it is an island, Nantucket is a very safe place to visit.  Having said this, there are certain precautions that one should take when traveling to any summer destination. Be sure to pack lots of sunscreen and supervise children when swimming. Visitors need to be very aware of the dangers posed by deer ticks - such as Lyme disease, etc. Take a moment when you return from the beach or out walking out of town to make sure you don't have any ticks on you. There's no need to be hyper paranoid - just take reasonable precautions.
