The quickest but most expensive way to travel to Kanchanaburi from Bangkok is by limo or taxi. This can be arranged beforehand with a company listed below:
You can arrange for one of the above to pick you up at your hotel or at one of the two airports. In addition, your hotel or guest house in Kanchanaburi may be able to arrange a transfer for you.
An exciting/scenic way to travel to Kanchanaburi is by rail. There are two daily departures from Thonburi station (Bangkok) at 07.50 and 13.55. They are scheduled to arrive at 10.25 and 16.24 respectively. However, do note that these services usually arrive at least fifteen minutes late.
For the return journey to Bangkok trains are scheduled to depart at 07.19 and 14.48. These are scheduled to arrive at 10.25 and 17.40. Again, expect these trains to arrive late. Rail travel to Kanchanaburi and beyond:
Frequent buses (number 81), both air conditioned and non air conditioned leave from the Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai) throughout the day. Tickets for the air con buses can be purchased at counters 79/80 but if they are closed you will be directed to platform 10 from where you can buy tickets. It is also where the buses to Kanchanaburi depart from. The journey by air con bus takes about 2.5 hours while the non air one takes longer. There are also buses (number 9918) which depart from the Northern Bus Terminal (Mo Chit) at 06.30 and 09.30. This service takes about three hours to Kanchanaburi bus station. This service also continues to Sangkhlaburi.
While the blue air con bus drops people off at the main bus terminal in Kanchanaburi it departs for Bangkok from a different location about 200 meters away.
Minivans depart from the Southern and Northern Bus Terminals. They also depart from Victory Monument which is easily reached by Skytrain. This link provides useful information on how to find the minivan for Kanchanaburi at Victory Monument:
For the return journey to Bangkok minivans depart from the main bus terminal. A number of guest houses in Kanchanaburi can arrange a minivan service to Bangkok/Suvarnabhumi Airport.
Travellers heading to the region by car can take either Highway 4 or Highway 338 to reach the area. Highway 338 tends to be faster (two hours), while Highway 4 is a more scenic route.
The Erawan Falls (bus 8170)
Non air con buses for the Erawan Falls depart from the bus terminal in Kanchanaburi at the following times:
08.00 - 08.55 - 09.50 -10.45 -11.50 - 13.30 - 15.00 -16.20 - 17.40
If you want to be guaranteed a seat on this service do board the vehicle at the bus terminal in town. Otherwise, you can board a bus on the Saengchuto Road (opposite the railway station) which is a few minutes walk from the Mae Nam Kwai Road (where guest houses are located). Indeed the buses for the Erawan drive slowly out of town looking for passengers and are easy to hail down. The buses are blue and easy to spot since the destination is clearly written
The Erawan Falls to Kanchanaburi:
05.40 - 06.20 - 07.00 - 08.00 - 10.00 - 12.00 - 14.00 - 15.00 - 16.30
Kanchanaburi - Nam Tok - Thong Pha Phum- Sangkhlaburi (air con limited stop: bus 9918)
Buses depart Kanchanaburi at 09.30 and 12.30 for Sai Yok town, Thong Pha Phum and Sangkhlaburi. Journey time to Sai Yok is about one hor while expect it to take two hours to reach Thong Pha Phum. Add another 1.5 to 2 hours from Thong Pha Phum to Sangkhlaburi.
Buses depart Sangkhlaburi for Kanchanaburi and Bangkok at 07.45 and 09.30. The same buses leave from Thong Pha Phum at 09.45 and 11.30
Thong Pha Phum town to Thong Pha Phum National Park and E Tong Village
There are two daily songtaows that depart from Thong Pha Phum Market (opposite 711) at 09.30 and 10.30 for E Tong. These pass by the main entrance to Thong Pha Phum national park. The same songtaows leave E Tong for Thong Pha Phum between 06.00 and 07.30. Check the evening before for exact times.
Kanchanaburi - Tiger Temple (turning off) - Sai Yok (for Nam Tok) - Hellfire Pass - Hin Dat Hot Springs - Thong Pha Phum - Sangkhlaburi (non air con, bus 8203)
Buses are scheduled to depart every 20 to 30 minutes throughout the day from 06.30 to 18.30 but you can wait up to 40 minutes. Most go to Thong Pha Phum only but the ones below make the journey all the way to Sangkhlaburi:

Buses depart from Sanghkhlaburi for Kanchanaburi at 06.30 - 08.00 - 09.30 - 13.00
Phunamron (on the border with Myanmar)
Buse depart Kanchanaburi at 09.00 - 12.00 - 16.20 - 18.00 and return at 06.00 - 07.20 - 11.00 - 14.30
Ratchaburi (bus 461)
Buses depart every 20 minutes from 05.10 until 18.20
For Hua Hin take bus 71 from Ratchaburi
Suphanburi (bus 411)
Buses depart every 15 to 20 minutes from 05.10 until 17.55
For Ayutthaya take bus 703 from Suphanburi
Bo Ploy (bus 325)
Buses depart every 30 minutes from 06.00 until 18.30
Chiang Mai (bus)
There are three daily buses which depart for Chiang Mai at 09.00, 18.00 and 19.00 (VIP) These services stop off at Suphanburi, Nakhon Sawan, Kamphaeng Phet, Tak and Lampang along the way. The cost of a ticket to Chiang Mai is 540 baht for an ordinary bus while the VIP service at 19.00 costs 820 baht. For more information telephone 092 7247460

There are two daily buses at 09.00 and 18.30 for Non Khai. These stop off at Korat , Khon Khaen and Udon Thani along the way. The earlier service is a VIP bus which costs 829 baht while the later one is a regular bus and costs 533 baht.

Kanchanaburi - Thong Pha Phum - Sangkhlaburi (minivan)
These depart from just outside the bus station in Kanchanaburi and depart every 20 to 30 minutes throughout the day from 07.00 to 17.30. While these minivans drop passengers down along the route they do not pick passengers up.
Kanchanaburi - Ratchaburi - Petchaburi - Cha am - Hua Hin (minivan)
Minivans depart from the main bus station at 05.00 and then from 06.15 on an hourly basis until 18.15. The cost is 220 baht and journey time is approximately 3.5 hours. In the other direction they depart from the Market Village, a mall south of town. The departure point is on the right hand side of the mall (Bangkok Bank side) a few meters away from the main entrance. Departure times are 08.00 to 16.00 and 18.00
