Koh Lipe Thailand

Koh Lipe is a small island in Southern Thailand and is part of the Butang Islands in Tarutao National Marine Park. Being located in the Andaman sea, only 1 hour by speed boat from Langkawi, it boasts generally very calm and clear waters making it perfect for a day of snorkeling or diving. The island itself is quite small, there is a path around the island which takes approx 1 ½ hours to circumnavigate.

Getting there

There is a speedboat that leaves from Telaga Harbour daily from November to May. There is no jetty on Koh Lipe, depending on tides you will arrive directly onto the beach or onto a pontoon and be delivered to the beach by a long tail boat. Be prepared to get your feet wet!

Good snorkeling can be had directly out from the main beach, Pattaya, which is also where you arrive from Langkawi. You will see many Anenome (clown) fish, Barracuda, Cornetfish, Snapper, Angel and Butterfly fish with a high possibility of seeing Pufferfish and even a Morey eel amongst the coral. Snorkeling equipment is available for rent on the beach and try the south end of Pattaya beach, in front of Bundhaya resort and immigration as the best area for snorkeling.

Diving is done around the nearby islands with generally good visibility and some wonderful soft and hard corals and many different species of fish.  Diving can be arranged through Ocean Pro Divers. Eating & Drinking:

There is some very good Thai and Western food available on Koh Lipe,   Vrecommended is Varin Resort for Thai food and Bundhaya for Western options. Also excellent is Mango sticky rice, available on the village path through the centre of the island. A word of warning, if you are eating the BBQ at the far end of the beach near Daya Resort, there are some sea gypsies who do a BBQ. They like to short change your fish and calamari and can become aggressive when confronted that thay have short changed you.

Spa Treaments

There are many spa options though try Armin who is beside the pancake shop. tHe is able to provide a much better treatment as he trained for many years in Thai Hospitols and colledges. the prices are around 300 Bart per hour, though the rooms are very basic.

If you are doing at one day trip to Koh Lipe from Langkawi the local immigration staff in Koh Lipe will hold onto your passport for the day and it will be returned to you upon arriving back in Langkawi.

If you are staying overnight then your passport will be passed to the Thai immigration official who will stamp your passport and return it to you. You will then need to check in at 1.30 on the day or your departure leaving your passport at immigration and it will be returned to you after arriving back in Langkawi.

You will need Thai Baht for incidentals during your time, there is a Maybank currency exchange at Telaga Harbour or you can change Ringgit on the island.
