The People of Sabah

Citizens of the country of Malaysia are known as Malaysians (not Malays, which is just one ethnic group found in Malaysia).

Sabah is one of thirteen states that make up the Federation of Malaysia. So besides being Malaysians, the people of Sabah are also collectively known as Sabahans.

Sabahans are made up of various ethnic groups:

1)     Kadazan-Dusun

2)     Bajau

3)     Bruneian / Malay

4)     Murut

5)   Rungus, Tatana, Lun Dayeh, Tindal, Tobilung, Kimaragang, Ubian, Tagal, Timogun, Nabay, Kedayan, Orang Sungai, Makiang, Minokok, Mangka’ak, Lobu, Bonggi, Tidong, Ida’an (Idahan), Begahak, Kagayan, Talantang, Tinagas, Gana, Kuijau, Tombonuo, Dumpas, Peluan, Baukan.

6)     Chinese origin - predominantly Hakka, Cantonese, Hokkien, Sino (mixed with native).

7)     Indian origin – Punjabi, Tamil

8)     Sarawakian origin such as Iban, Dayak or Penan

9)     Filipino origin – Chavacano, Bisaya/Visaya, Ilocano, Suluk, Badjao, Iranun, Tausug

10)  Indonesian origin – Bugis, Jawa, Timoris, Banjar
