When walking and visiting lavish palaces is no longer an option, there is a wide selection of canal and river cruises. The cruises are inexpensive and some serve food and drinks. The beautiful Summer Gardens are adorned with marble and bronze statues and fountains and provide a welcome break from sightseeing. A one-day trip to the Peterhof Palace and Park is a must during summer. There are beautifully landscaped gardens and the magnificent fountains that provide hours of entertainment.

Most of the restaurants in St Petersburg are children-friendly during the day, some may refuse entry to kids in the evening, so it's wise to check in advance. If traditional Russian dishes seem too foreign to your younger lot, there are standard chains and local fast food cafes. Layma, Bistro Sadko and numerous pizza places offer easy and good meals.

There are two puppet theaters and an excellent Circus on Fontanka. Seeing the Kirov/Mariinsky Ballet is unforgettable and should be booked well in advance.

Reliable babysitting can be arranged at the major hotels, but no children's facilities or camps are offered.
