You will definitely feel safe when you are in Buzios. Though it is an area that draws a lot of tourists, the locals are very friendly and respectful of their patrons. As most people know, Brazil can be a place that will be unfriendly to unsuspecting tourists who wander away from the touristy locations, but Buzios is a small town that is taken care of by its inhabitants. It is definitely not a good idea to just go wandering off by yourself in parts of town that you don't know, but you don't have to look over your shoulder either. Still, there are things that you need to keep in mind to make sure your vacation isn't ruined. First, you never want to leave your wallet just lying out on a table. Pick pocketers can just come up and grab it before you even notice what happened. You shouldn't let a camera dangle from your neck at any time, and after you have taken a picture, put the camera back in your pocket. You should always try to blend in with the crowd, and even if you are pale white and everyone else is tanned, you should still try not to stick out. It isn't that difficult, you just need to act like you know what is going on. Never take out a map and just inspect it as if you haven't the slightest clue as to where you are. If you ever to get into trouble you can contact the Buzios Police Department, and if it is a very serious matter, you should get in touch with the American Embassy.
