The Werner Sauter Biological Reserve is the only protected area in Playa Samara. The reserve is located on the highest hill directly behind Samara beach. It was created by Mr. Werner Sauter, one of the first inhabitants of Playa Samara over 25 years ago. As an avid conservationist, he recognized the need for conserving Samara’s forests and has chosen to share the land with others interested in enjoying the beauty of the property.
The 1 1/2 hour hike is a "must do" for anyone who enjoys viewing wildlife, walking in the forest, or great views. The reserve is home to various species of plants and animals including howler monkeys, various types of birds, and coati's. At the top, there is a view of both Playa Samara and Playa Carillo - absolutely gorgeous!
