First off, the recently renovated downtown shopping district is surprisingly pleasant to simply walk around. On a hot summer day, the lack of shade can be daunting, but there are many interesting independent shops sharing space with the larger chains, and the general ambiance of Mt. Diablo Blvd. is quite nice.
More enjoyable, however, is the Lafayette Reservoir, where on a nice day you can easily spend a fun afternoon. There are two main trails, a two-mile paved route along the shore of the reservoir itself, and a six-mile dirt trail that runs up and down the hills which form a bowl around the lake. When you're done taking in the views and the quiet, you can rent a paddleboat and go out on the lake itself! The boats seat up to four, and are
