RED Contemporary Art gallery at the Sheraton Steamboat Resort Hotel is a welcome variation on the standard art fare of mountain resort towns. Rarely to never will one find a traditional plein air style painting as the gallery represents twenty plus established career artists employing a 21st century contemporary model, method and theme in their works. Lots of patterning, bits of allegory, some decorative, many etherial color-field works evocative of landscape, and a smattering of loose and fluid animals familiar to the region. The curators appear to love drips, and scribbles are big. Primary focus is painting in both acrylic and oil, plus mixed media, works on paper, sculpture, and limitedphotography. Summer hours at RED are limited to Wednesday through Saturday from 1-7 and by appointment anytime, while winter finds the gallery open everyday 11 to 8pm. Much work can be seen on the website, updated regularly. The environment is upbeat, minimal, and friendly with a low-key no pressure sales style. It's actually pleasant to go there and hang out. RED has an Artist-in-Residency program with the artist working on-site at the gallery on specific days. They also facilitate satellite galleries at their three favorite restaurants. If you are lucky enough to hit there on an opening night, they tend to have outrageous receptions with Afro-Cuban bands and dancing and scrumptious appertizers.
