If you are looking for a place to feel like a real local, head directly across the street to the bookstore, Epilogue Book Company, where the owners know everyone by name.  They have a great selection of books on the area, snd you can even find the New York Times daily and great books for the kids.  They also have free wi-fi and complimentary latte's while you browse

Paradise Found of Steamboat Springs is another store, with trendy, somewhat affordable clothes (around $70 for pants & $35 for tops). If you want help picking out clothes, the Russian couple working there will work until they find something that you like.  They also have temporary Henna tattooes. Depending on what kind of day they are having, you may get a discount if you ask on an item.

The Steamboat Shoe Market had a vast array of outdoor shoes and very friendly staff.   They have Merrills, Clark, Dansko etc.

Some other shops not to be missed:  Quiksilver Steamboat: Locally owned Roxy and Quiksilver brand store, Homesteader:  Steamboat's boutique kitchen shop, Chez Nous. and  Moose Mountain:  Shops with fabulous clothes for women and lots of other fun things to buy.

You can also check a consignment shop (1855 Shield Drive on the west side of town) with a fantastic selection of quality consignment items at very attractive prices.  One can gamble on the pricing since they show the incremental price reductions by date or you can pay the current price.  Additionally, they mix in an assortment of new items at what appeared to be very fair pricing.  Website:
