Being the home of a University the size of UF (University of Florida) really helps bring the performing arts to town. The Most noteble venue is the Phillips Center for The Performing Arts located on the University campus which hosts a year long calendar of events that includes everything from Orchestras, Dance performances,  world class musicians, theater, and much more. Along with the fabulous performances, the Phillips Center offers wonderful acoustics which makes it all that much better a venue to see any type of show. The Phillips Center offers many different membership options that allow seats to be reserved well in advance. Students can often get huge discounts on tickets with their ID and for shows that don't sell out, the general public is often offered tickets on the day of the event for as little as $10.

The Hippodrome theater located in the beautiful old historic federal building in the heart of downtown, brings a creative and artistic spirit to the community.  Their cinema features independant and political films that arn't offered by the chain movie theaters. The main stage features professionally produced plays similar to what you might find in an off-broadway theater.
