Lexington can safely be described as a safe city, and crime consistently ranks below the national average. The Lexington-Fayette Urban Country Police Department operates foot and car patrols, as well as two specialized units. These include the Lexington Mounted Police Unit and the Mountain Bike Unit, which patrol the downtown area on either horseback or bicycles to help keep the community safe. In 2004 reported crimes were at their lowest in 30 years, and a survey released in 2005 by Mercer Human Resource Consulting ranked Lexington as one of the five safest cities in the United States.
