Bethel is "Maine's Most Beautiful Mountain Village" and is a wonderful village to stroll around. At one end is the Historic district with The Bethel Hill Common and many grand homes as well as The Bethel Historical Society's two houses. Walk down Church Street past the grounds and beautiful brick buildings of Gould Academy and back toward Main Street where there are several village shops and restaurants.Stop by the Chamber of Commerce office for a historical walking tour map.
Bethel also has a lovely paved walking trail that begins just out of the village in Davis Park and continues through a replica of The Artists' Covered Bridge and on across the Androscroggin River on a pedestrian bridge for about a mile. (2 miles round trip) Watch for this to be extended very soon.
