The two major interstates running through Grand Rapids are US131 running North and South, and I96, running East and West; the two cross on the northwest side, making this area a good place to stay for visitors planning to hop all over town. Downtown areas are highly walkable, but because of the car dependence felt by most residents in other parts of the city, pedestrians tend to be few and far between. Don't even think about trying to get around without a car once in the suburbs. While the city is serviced by an award-winning bus system, the schedules are a little hard to figure out, and life will be much easier with a rental car if exploring the suburbs or getting to events and attractions quickly is in the itinerary.
