Original construction dates to the late 1920's, with a major remodelling in 1950. Subsequent remodelling has added some modern features (such as luxury boxes), but one does not have to look hard to find the sense of 1920's design and construction. The main arena is home to the University of Minnesota Golden Gopher's men's and women's basketball teams; a smaller attached arena had once been the ice arena for the hockey team, but was remodelled in the 1990's for wrestling, volleyball and other sports (hockey moved across the street to a brand new facility in 1993). The most notable feature of the basketball arena is the raised floor, which can be intimidating for opponents. When there is a full crowd and the Gophers are playing well the noise can be thundering. With the arched roof and knowledge that the building is basic in many respects, Williams Arena is affectionately known by students as "The Barn;" this also makes sense as the University is a major agricultural teaching and research institution (the "Farm Campus" is just a mile away in St. Paul).
