There are two exits off NY Rt 9W entering this tiny village just outside the gates of West Point. The first one from 9W north onto Rt 218 starts out with a lovely drive past residential neighboorhoods to a fork in the road made up of a lovely gazebo and park.. Here is where you want to stay right and head to the USMA museum and visitors' center and onto the USMA at West Point. The alternative is to bear left and drive onto Main St, the business section of Highland Falls. At one time this street was probably a beautiful street of Victorian and other turn-of-the-century buildings, but today few nice looking buildings remain such as Town Hall, Village Hall, and the public library and some churches. Many have been covered over poorly with cheap facades in an apparant attempt to avoid repainting, repairing and restoring the building's unique details. Most businesses serve the local population with hardware, hair salons, banks, food and insurance. There are only a couple of gift shops. parking can be a problem. The second exit off (W north requires that you follow Rt 218 down Mountain Ave. Likewise you drive past some residential areas, a school and arrive at an intersection. Make the left onto Main St or travel one short block and turn left for West Point.
