The Town of Salem, South Carolina is nestled in the Cherokee Foothills of the Southern Applachians.  There are just a handful of local businesses like a pizza palor (Cannone's) and a small restaurant or two.   Accomodations range from camping / RV sites at Devils Fork State Park or vacation rentals like Maplecrest at Lake Jocassee.  The area is rich in waterfalls and scenic hiking areas or boating excursions are part of the outdoor adventure here.  Jocassee Outdoor Center is a resource for lake access and boating rentals or supplies.  Lake Jocassee is just magnificent with dozens of cascading waterfalls and a shoreline that is 95% protected from development as part of The Jocassee Gorges Conservation Area.  Best time to visit is May thru September.
