The Newport Folk Festival (a.k.a. Dunkin Donuts Newport Folk Festival) is held in the beginning of August each year.

Three days hardly seems long enough for all these performers - but  the calendar doesn't lie. The performers are newcomers and legends, from the U.S. and abroad. Not only are the streets of Newport teeming with fans, but so are the waters.

Friday night's kick-off concert is at the Newport Casino at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. It's an outdoor arena - a huge lawn surrounded by the impressive dark wood and brick building from the late 1800s. Dress code is casual to black tie and seating is provided. No lawn chairs for this crowd!

Saturday and Sunday concerts are held outdoors at the historic Fort Adams State Park, which sits on a peninsula in the Naragansett Bay. It can be brutally hot, dismally rainy, or perfectly delightful with timely sun-blocking clouds and cooling breezes from the water. Things you'll want to consider bringing:

  1. Concert schedule (with three seperate venues, it's easy to lose track of who is playing where, and when)
  2. blanket and/or camping mat for comfortable sitting
  3. sunscreen and lip balm
  4. camera (there is a special area for nonprofessional phorographers)
  5. binoculars (you may need them to see your favorite performers)
  6. low chairs (low to ground, so you do not block other's views)
  7. Collapsible stroller or wagon for children (it's politer to not block someone else's view)
  8. small cooler
  9. umbrella if rain looks possible
  10. gum or mints
  11. small notebook (write down the names of songs and musicians, etc.)
  12. Cash (for food, beverages, crafts - there is a lot to buy here - more than just t-shirts)

Saturday and Sunday nights, the festivities end rather early, by 8:00 p.m. But don't think imagine you'll be hard-pressed to fill your evenings. The town is alive and filled with a party atmosphere. With all the great clubs and restaurants in walking distance, you will find yourself having to make choices, instead of having to make do.

The Newport Jazz Festival (ak.a. the JVC Jazz Festival Newport) is held in mid-August.

Founded in 1954, this is the " Grandaddy of all jazz festivals ." It's run by the same management company that produces the Newport Folk Festival and the venues are the same. See the Newport Folk Festival entry above for more details.
