The lounge room opens onto a sheltered pergola with a BBQ which looks out over a pretty garden.
Wood dining table comfortably seats 6.
A fully equipped modern kitchen provides all the necessary items for preparing delicious meals.
The open plan kitchen with an outlook to the other living areas.
Bedroom one has a queen bed. All beds have superior mattresses.
Bedroom two also has a queen bed. All beds have electric blankets.
Bedroom three has a king single bed. All bedrooms have a bank heater.
Bedroom four has a long single bed. All bedrooms have large windows, thick curtains and are quiet.
A fully renovated bathroom with bath, shower, basin and toilet.
The main bathroom also has a heated towel rail and a heated floor.
We have a second (half) bathroom with a toilet and basin.
A fully equipped laundry plus indoor and outdoor washing lines
The house sits behind a native garden in a quiet street close to town services.
A lockable garage can be used for storing bikes and fishing of golf equipment.
Lake Wakatipu can be seen along the picturesque drive from Queenstown to Lumsden.
Southland is a stronghold for healthy populations of large brown trout.
Regular rain promotes fields of wildflowers along many rivers in Southland.
Sneaking along the bank and hoping to land a dry fly successfully.

Autumn is a good time to visit as days are cooler and fish are eager to eat before spawning.
Tributaries of the Oreti River can have emerald green clear water and very large, wary brown trout.
The endangered Black-Billed Gull lives in Southland...its braided rivers are its last refuge.
Small native birds like the Bush robin often follow people who walk along forest tracks.
The Kingston Flyer is a remnant of the glorious days of steam trains in Southland.
Lumsden was a central point for the old steam train network. Relics include a lovely trestle bridge.
Cycling to a favorite fishing section of the nearby Oreti River.
The new cycle track now winds into and out of Lumsden along the banks of the aqua blue Oreti River.
The Around the Mountains Cycle and Walking Trail now connects Lumsden to Mossburn and Kingston.

The house is managed by a House Manager who lives nearby. She will organise keys and is available to answer any questions about how to use appliances or about the town and region. The house is only rented to one party whether the booking needs 1 bedroom or all 4. The manager and owner are happy to answer questions about activities in the area especially about trout fishing, walking, cycling or sight-seeing. Fishing rods are not available at the house but can be purchased for a very reasonable cost at least 2 shops in Lumsden. Rods and waders can also be hired at the local fly fishing shop.

Our family had an amazing stay in Lumsden. Great central location to Queenstown, Milford Sound and Invercargill. It’s a big house which wass well equipped. Great for relaxing or exploring the sights. Fully recommend this place to anyone.

My brother and I are avid fly fisherman. Rod & Wheelhouse is a perfect fit for what we needed. All the amenitites are at our fingertips. Quiet street. Great mattresses. Very reasonably priced. We would not hesitate returning. Scott Raggatt

It was pure luck we got this amazing place at the last minute, it had everything there as well as porta cot and highchair for the grandson, beautiful place presented immaculately, a real gem.

About the neighbourhood
Lumsden is a small country town set within sheep, dairy and deer farms. It sits on the banks of the beautiful Oreti River and is surrounded by mountains. It has a primary and a secondary school, a modern supermarket, a number of cafés and restaurants, pharmacy, post office, pub, dairy, liquor shop, petrol station, library and medical center.
Rod and Wheel House is positioned in its own private garden surrounded by hedges. However it is also only a short walk from shops, restaurants and town services.

Getting around
It is best to travel in Southland by a car/hired vehicle. Many of the most scenic spots are off the main roads and difficult to enjoy by public transport. A public bus can get you to Lumsden but your touring options are very limited unless you have a vehicle. The Oreti River is a short walk from the house and the local shops are only a 5 minute walk away but other fantastic places are a 10, 20, 30 or 40 minute drive away.

Rod and Wheel House is located in the country town of Lumsden on the lower part of the South Island of New Zealand. Lumsden is a short drive ( less than 1 hour) from two international Airports- Queenstown and Invercargill.
The drive to Lumsden is scenic and fairly straightforward. In particular the drive from Queenstown is especially picturesque as it travels along the edges of Lake Wakatipu before continuing through wide, green glacial plains spotted with sheep and deer, surrounded by towering mountains. The trip will cross the upper Mataura River which will give your first view of this gin clear waterway.
