The location is simply amazing, right at the very heart of Perigord Noir, a stone’s throw from many of the region’s world-famous towns and villages, including Beynac, La Roque Gageac, Domme and Sarlat. A 400km network of circular walks and trails can be accessed from the back door and there's also a similar network of cycle routes. The nearest canoe station is just 1 mile away, as in an award-winning bakery/patisserie! La Longere itself is a delightful cottage adjoining limestone barn on the edge of the village of St Vincent-de-Cosse. The cottage has four bedrooms, one of which is downstairs – ideal for anyone with mobility issues. There’s also a downstairs bathroom with a separate toilet. The other 3 bedrooms are upstairs. Bedroom 2 is a lovely double, south-facing, which is next to the family bathroom (again the toilet is separate). Bedroom 3 (twin) and bedroom 4 (double) are adjoining. The kitchen diner is the focal point of the house with its magnificent fireplace and a huge farmhouse table (made from an old barn door!) which can seat up to 10 people in comfort. The galley kitchen is fully equipped, with a gas hob, electric oven, large Samsung fridge-freezer and 2 small dishwashers. The kitchen-diner opens out onto the huge, south-facing front verandah. If the weather is fine there is no doubt this will be where you spend the majority of your time. There’s a large stone BBQ (with chimney) and the adjoining front garden is fully enclosed, with sweeping views across the fields to the Dordogne valley. Back inside the compact living room contains 2 huge comfy sofas and English Satellite TV. There is WI-FI throughout the house. The lawned garden is fully enclosed by wire fencing and amounts to about ½ an acre. Beyond the lawned garden is an unenclosed wild garden which sweeps up and around the hill behind the house, and affords magnificent views over the walnut trees and across the Dordogne valley. Guests are free to wander through the wild garden, although it can be steep in places so adults may want to take a look for themselves before allowing children to roam free. At the rear of the house there is another huge verandah, similar in size and design to the one at the front. On the very hottest days the rear (north-facing) verandah can provide much welcome respite from the blazing summer sun. There are over 7 acres of land, with a large field to the front of the house, alongside 48 walnut trees. To the side and rear we have an enclosed, 1/2 acre garden and behind that we have our 'wild' garden, which sweeps up the hillside on the north side of the house. The views from here are spectacular. Local amenities are plentiful. There is a bakery, butcher, wine merchant, restaurant, hotel and snack bar all within 1 mile and a further 3 excellent restaurants within 2.5 miles. There is a full array of shops and restaurants at St Cyprien (including a Carrefour supermarket), whilst Beynac has some charming boutique shops and restaurants. Sarlat is just 8 miles away, with numerous shops and restaurants, including a hypermarket. Well-behaved pets are most welcome. BED LINEN & TOWELS Please note that bed linen and towels are supplied at €20 per person, payable to our local property management agency. Since many guests who come to stay from continental countries such as France and Germany are often keen to bring their own bed linen and towels, we thought it would make sense to break this out of the overall cost and make it optional. Our local property management agency will therefore be in touch shortly after your booking confirmation to discuss your requirements.More

Interaction with guests
We are very keen to interact with guests and potential guests as much as possible. To that end, please feel free to ask us anything. And since this is our very first year renting out La Longere we'd be really thrilled to receive as much frank and honest feedback as possible (preferably by email!). We also know the area pretty well now, so if you'd like to receive suggestions on things to do, places to see and (perhaps most importantly!) which restaurants to go to, then please feel free to drop us a line. For those that want or need some enhanced support, James would be delighted to put together a recommended itinerary covering the duration of your stay, to ensure you get the maximum return from your holiday in the Dordogne.

This was our first trip back to the Dordogne in 20 yrs. The area was almost unchanged, just as picturesque as we remembered. La longere is a gorgeous property with stunning views all round and was in the perfect spot for us to explore and...More

About the neighbourhood
Perigord Noir (Black Perigord - black as in the thick oak and chestnut forests) is the most famous and one of the most attractive parts of the Dordogne. This area is renowned for its gastronomic traditions, relaxed way of life and internationally renowned cultural sights. Here you will discover unspoilt nature, grandiose landscapes and a plethora of magical sights teeming with history: prehistoric deposits and caves; castles from the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods ; medieval villages full of character ; romanesque churches adorned with sculpted tympanums; water mills in the romantic landscapes; and of course a gastronomic tradition which is famous the world over. All we can say is, enjoy!
Getting around
We definitely recommend a car. That said, there is a rather charming railway line which runs from Sarlat all the way to Bordeaux. There's a station at Saint Cyprien, just 5 minutes away from La Longere, so if you fancy a day trip to Bergerac or Bordeaux by train (travelling partly along the river and through the famous vineyards of Bordeaux) then this is a great option. Alternatively hop on the train to go to Sarlat in the opposite direction (A 15 minute journey). This is a good option for market day, which is Saturday, to enable you to avoid the traditional bunfight for a parking space.
