Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.

Relaxing family holiday in the Scottish countryside
The cottage was ideal for our family group, which ranged in age from 10 to 83. Our hosts Zan and Joe were friendly and welcomed us on arrival with a box of eggs from the hens and ducks which roamed freely around the farm. We loved the combination of the bustle of the farm yard and the tranquility of the surrounding countryside. The cottage was comfortably furnished and well equipped. Having two bathrooms and the extra bed in the living room worked well for our multi-generational household. We would happily visit again.

Stunning outlook, comfortable and spacious accommodation. Peaceful, loved it!
The cottage is on a farm, off the beaten track and absolutely wonderful if you want to escape your usual daily urban hassle. Uninterrupted views of miles of country side from the windows, ducks and hens milling around your doorstep and out door sitting area. Inside the cottage is very comfortable and the kitchen is well equipped, all fittings are of a high quality. There are even two TV s with two DVD players, excellent if it’s wet and you have 2 or 3 kids. There are two bathrooms ( one is en-suite) another important point if you are visiting with the family. The place was always nice and warm, another excellent feature particularly if you arrive back after a wet and cold trek. We love walking, and here deep in the countryside the opportunities are endless, we even saw RED squirrels on one walk! Dumfries is quite close and coastal walks / beaches are not too far away. Parking is available out side the cottage, the owners are very helpful and friendly. We are definitely hoping to visit again.

Homely cosy cottage in a beautiful setting
Spacious, warm and well equipped. Beautiful tranquil setting with easy access to many other attractions. Nearby beach is excellent and scenery gorgeous. Loved watching the animals and birds on the farm. Some of the equipment is a bit dated and the TV tiny but this didn’t stop our enjoyment of our stay.

Perfect family stay
We had a brilliant time at the cheese house. It was bigger than expected, had everything we needed and nice and warm. The children loved having the farm just outside the door and there are so many forests and beaches to explore not far away. We didn't want to leave. Thank you

Enjoyed our stay at The Cheese House very much and would definitely go back.
Great location. Ideal for our short break. The owners were very welcoming and it was lovely to be on a working farm . A good mix of farm animals for visitors to look at but also a serious farming area. Brilliant. Although we come from Dumfries and Galloway but no longer live there it was great to be reminded of what a stunning part of Scotland it is.

Peaceful, cosy and beautiful
We thoroughly enjoyed our short weekend break at The Cheese House. There’s a warm welcome of homemade tea bread and tea/coffee making facilities when you arrive and the cottage was warm and cosy. The organic farm is fascinating with a view of the Galloway Belted Cattle from the kitchen window and a very friendly tan with impressive horns a short walk away. Great location to travel To and from. We visited WWT Caerlaverock 20 x mins away to see 10.000 barnacle geese! Zan is a very friendly host whom our dogs warmed to immediately!

About the neighbourhood
The quiet and tranquil nature of the scenic area is superb for walking. We have a walking leaflet with a series of seven walks, varying in difficulty and length, which start from the cottage door. The quiet roads are also superb for cyclists. The unspoilt nature of the area is ideal for a variety of wildlife species to thrive. In the countryside surrounding the cottage you can spot red squirrels, roe deer, buzzards and red kites. We are close to the Dark Skies Galloway Forest Park and therefore the cottage is ideally located for star gazing. There are plenty of nature reserves in the area too, the Wildlife and Wetland Trust at Caerlaverock and RSPB Mersehead are close by. Esk Rigg at Lockerbie is the best place to be guaranteed to see red squirrels and the Red Kite Trail at Laurieston, where the kites are fed every day at two o'clock, is a must see. There is lots to do in the area for families. Drumlanrig Castle is a fun day out for the whole family with a beautiful stately castle, adventure playground, and walking and cycling routes through the forest. At Cream O' Galloway, where delicious ice cream is made, you can watch the cows being milked, climb up the viewing tower or zoom down the flying fox. Locally, Thornhill is an attractive town with free parking and lovely independent shops including the 101, Tag and Voila for fashion; Thomas Tosh and Memories for gifts; and A Taste of Galloway and John G Renicks Butcher for great locally produced foods. Ellisland Farm, home of the famous poet Robert Burns, is a popular museum nearby where Burns wrote some of his best known poems including Tam O' Shanter. Here you can enjoy the peaceful setting, guided tours and riverside walk. In Dumfries you can also visit his house which is now a museum and also the Robert Burns Centre. There are several local golf courses (Thornhill and Sanquhar) and links courses (Powfoot and Southerness) nearby. The cottage is 4km from the River Nith, one of Scotland's most productive rivers, where salmon and sea trout can be caught. The 7Stanes mountain biking trails are also easily accessible from the cottage. Kirkcudbright is the regions artists town where many of the Glasgow Boys lived and worked in the early twentieth century, today it is a thriving art community with several galleries and shops. In the immediate vicinity, Lucianne Lassalle's studio at Wallaceton offers classes throughout the year. The Spring Fling, held on the last weekend in May, covers the length and breadth of the region and is Scotland's leading visual art and craft open studio event. There are several regional festivals, including the Newton Stewart Walking Festival in May, the Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival also in May, The Kirkcudbright Jazz Festival in June, the Wickerman Festival in July, and the Lockerbie Jazz Festival in September.
Getting around
The best way to enjoy the area and make the most of the activities on offer is via car, we have plenty of free parking.
