Holiday Rental House
Traditional French house with 2 beds, terrace, views A real French experience in this beautiful village of Estal. Originally a bastide house where you lived upstairs with your animals beneath you, it has been extended to include 2 double bedrooms, a large sitting room with a sofa bed and roomy dining kitchen with access onto the terrace outside. There are stunning views and friendly people here. If you like, you can picnic in our 1 acre field beneath the house or in our large walnut orchard at the top of the village. Canoeing, bicycling, swimming, walking, tennis, golf and gastronomy are all available nearby. Meander up from Bretenoux through peach and walnut orchards and the vineyards of Glanes (the wine is thoroughly recommended!) to arrive at Estal, a small village perched on the edge of the hill, with the most beautiful views back down towards the Dordogne gorge. This is real France. Farming is the main activity and our field beneath the house is rented by a local dairy farm, but has steps down to it and a flat area for sitting or games. The swallows swoop up and down the valley in front of our terrace during the day and there are many other birds to be seen. The wild flowers are most beautiful in May. The house is comfortable with beams and wooden floors with an oak staircase built by the local carpenter. Downstairs it is tiled to keep the temperature cool in summer. In spring or autumn the wood burning stove in the large fireplace keeps you comfortable. There is a small library of books to read. There is one double bed in the main bedroom and twin beds in the other bedroom. There is a sofa bed in the large sitting room. There is also a travel cot and a high chair to fit onto one of the dining chairs. Our neighbours look after this property for us. Linen and/or towels are included but, we ask you to give 40 euros per week or short stay to our neighbour. There are no shops now in the village, but, in Bretenoux there is a wide range of shops and a market. This is a bastide town with a colourful history. Castlenau de Bretenoux is the local castle, which together with the castle at Loubressac are definitely worth a visit. Please see our own website if you would like some more details, or email or ring us. If we drive to Estal, we usually go from Portsmouth to Caen, then it is 400 miles south which takes us 8 to 10 hours. If we fly, we go to Bergerac, Limoges, Rodez, Toulouse or Carcassonne airports, depending on the time of year and the various costs, then hire a car. If you would like to stay for a short break outside of July and August or would like to stay for two weeks, please contact us to arrange prices.More

About the neighbourhood
For the active - canoeing on the River Dordogne; walking along the Grand Randonee or the many footpaths, playing tennis in either Bretenoux or Carnac, swimming in the Lac du Tolerme For the history - the local castle Castelnaux de Bretenoux, the bastide town of Bretenoux, historic villages such as Carennac, Loubressac and nearby Teyssieu For relaxing - sitting on our patio enjoying the view with a glass of wine and delicious food, curling up on the sofa with a good book, staying in bed till midday!
How to get there
If you want to get there quickly then fly and hire a car. Rodez is the nearest airport but has limited flights. Bergerac is better and there is a lovely drive west along the River Dordogne to Bretenoux. Toulouse is further south but sometimes has the best flight deals. If you hire a car make sure you check its condition THOROUGHLY before driving out of the airport, including its tyres. If you would prefer to go by train, Brive is the nearest big station and you can hire a car there. Biars Bretenoux is the local station. If you go by ferry, the drive from Caen, Le Havre or St Malo is shorter than from Calais though the crossing will be dearer. We try to avoid the motorways (except past Le Mans - if you go into the city you have great difficulty getting out again!) because they are so expens...
