The Mill is a beautifully restored mid 17thC Venetian Olive Mill (Fabrica) with private garden and swimming pool in an elevated location surrounded by a swathe of olive groves in the quiet hamlet of Harvata, near the fishing village of Kolymbari. The Mill is situated about 500 feet above sea level, and offers stunning mountain views to the south and sea views over the Bay of Hania and the Rodopou Peninsula to the north. Although The Mill is in a secluded location and requires car hire, it offers easy access to the surrounding country side and coast (not to mention the oldest olive tree in Greece!). Local amenities include mini-markets, bakers, tavernas, pharmacy and garage. Although The Mill is in a secluded location and requires car hire, it offers easy access to the surrounding country side and coast (not to mention the oldest olive tree in Greece!). Local amenities include mini-markets, bakers, tavernas, pharmacy and garage. Historically, Crete has always been a wine growing country, and it was only in the Venetian period that the cultivation of olive trees was encouraged. The production of both wine and olive oil continued for over 200 years until 1974, when over 95% of the Cretan vineyards were destroyed by Phylloxera (a parasite that destroys the roots of the vine), which resulted in the Cretan farmers planting the olive trees which are evident around The Mill today, most of which are over 35 years old. Extra Virgin Olive Oil prices have slumped in recent years, and the trend is currently to replace the olive groves with vineyards. Grape picking takes place between mid August and the end of September, and olives are harvested between late October and February.
