Limoux and it's surrounding area is so diverse, 1 hour from the first ski station, 1 hour from the Mediterranean, Limoux is on the river Aude on which you can canoe, fish in season, white water raft, paddle (in some places swim), relax beside and have picnics.
The town is surrounded by beautiful countryside in which to walk, cycle and have leisurely drives. There are plenty of vineyards to visit and wine to taste and the speciality of Limoux is the sparkling wine Blanquette, the forerunner to champagne.
The whole area is steeped in history and Limoux is central to it all, Carcassonne to the north, Rennes-le-Chateau and the Cathar castles to the south, Saint Hilaire, St. Polycarpe and Legrasse with their abbeys to the east and Mirepoix with it's medieval centre to the west and much more in between.
Limoux itself is a little market town with a big heart, most of the year there is something going on, concerts of all types (jazz, classical, brass, flamenco etc) there is a small theatre, lovely public swimming pools (two indoor, open beginning of September to end June and three outdoor which are open July and August - these are surrounded by sun loungers for the sun worshippers!).
The weekly market is on Friday morning all year round (but Thursday if there is a bank holiday on the Friday!), fruit & veg market also on Sunday mornings and during the summer peach and melon stalls each morning. During July and August the is an evening market each Tuesday.
Special Artisan and regional produce markets are also held throughout the year. We have the Fois Gras market in November, Nuit de la Fricassee in August, the folklore festival in July, the Feria end of June/beginning of July........and so much more!!
Come and enjoy the sunshine, cafe culture and slower pace of life!!
